IRNAS – CSIC |
Institute profile: |
The Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville (IRNAS) is part of the CSIC, which is the legal entity and the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain. The IRNAS has been devoted since 1953 to research activities in basic and applied science. Among the main research lines are: 1) to study the impact of pollutants from industrial, urban and agricultural activities; 2) to develop systems of soil evaluation and monitoring oriented to soil protection, and 3) to evaluate techniques for ecological restoration of contaminated lands. The research group has been closely involved in the assessment of the contamination of the Guadiamar area (RECARE case study) since the mine spill in 1998. In collaboration with the Regional Government agencies, IRNAS scientists have advised about remediation measures, such as immobilization of soil contaminants and restoration of the vegetation cover, and monitored trace elements in soil and plants. |
